What is the best way to get to Kauai, Hawaii? Well, honestly, there are only two ways to get there. You can fly, or you can take a cruise. There currently are no boats or ferries that go to Kauai because the channels between the islands are too wide and too treacherous for any but the biggest boats.

Kauai Rentals

Flying into Kauai, you will be heading into Lihue airport, or LIH. Lihue is pronounced lee-HOO-ee. Certain airlines do fly directly into Lihue from the U.S. Mainland. You will probably not find direct international flights - they will all need to connect in Honolulu, I believe.

Kauai Rentals

If your airline does not fly direct into Lihue, you'll have to fly into Honolulu on Oahu first and then take a connecting flight via either Go! Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines. These flights fly all day and cost as little as one way and occasionally less with sales. Your airline can also book this for you.

Kauai Rentals

If you are going to take a cruise around the islands, you'll be flying into Honolulu and then most cruises last about 7 days. They generally leave out of Honolulu, hit two ports on the big island, one on Maui, and one on Kauai and then back to Honolulu. You may only be able to stay on Kauai for a day if you choose this option.

There was at one point a ferry to Kauai but it only lasted for a day or two. The Hawaiian Superferry, as it was called, sailed to Kauai once but a huge environmental and community uproar stopped it from continuing and eventually ran it out of Hawaii for now. Maybe someday it will be back.
